The Acquisition Playbook.

Three patterns run through Affiliated Managers's acquisitions — what it looks for, how it pays, and how it folds in what it buys.

01
Acquisition criteria
The multi-affiliate partnership model.
AMG's core strategy is to buy equity interests in independent investment firms — its 'Affiliates' — while the firm's management keeps significant direct equity and full day-to-day autonomy. Deal after deal repeats the structure: a ~60% interest in Welch & Forbes, TimesSquare and Chicago Equity with principals holding the balance, and management 'retaining operating autonomy' at AQR and BlueMountain. AMG describes each new firm joining its 'family of Affiliates,' supplying permanent capital, distribution and strategic support rather than absorbing the target.

02
Capital deployment
A pivot from majority stakes in traditional boutiques to minority stakes in alternatives and private markets.
The earliest investments (Tweedy Browne, Systematic Financial, Welch & Forbes, TimesSquare, Chicago Equity) were majority interests in traditional equity, fixed-income and wealth managers. From ValueAct and BlueMountain (2007) onward — and overwhelmingly after 2016 — AMG shifted to minority 'GP-stakes' investments in alternatives and private-markets firms: EIG, Systematica, Capula, Winton, Comvest, Garda, Peppertree, Forbion, Ara Partners, Suma, Qualitas Energy and Verition are all minority stakes in hedge funds, credit, private equity, infrastructure and real estate.
Systematic Financial ManagementSkyline Asset ManagementRenaissance Investment ManagementFirst QuadrantGofen and Glossberg
03
Integration approach
Serial, global and actively managed.
AMG has made 60+ disclosed affiliate investments since the mid-1990s across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Asia and South Africa, deliberately diversifying by asset class and geography — including whole platforms bought in one transaction (six Canadian firms via First Asset Management in 2005; Aston via Highbury Financial in 2010). The portfolio is also actively pruned: AMG exited First Quadrant (2005), monetized Baring Private Equity Asia through its 2022 combination with EQT, and saw Comvest and Montrusco Bolton interests transfer to new owners in 2025.
