Dr. Helen I. Torley, M.B. Ch.B., M.R.C.P., is President and Chief Executive Officer of Halozyme Therapeutics, a role she has held since 2014, and has served on the Board of Directors since 2014. She brings over 30 years of drug development, drug commercialization and general management expertise across the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, and led the company through a critical strategic transition in 2019.
Prior to Halozyme, Dr. Torley served as Chief Commercial Officer at Onyx Pharmaceuticals from 2011 to 2013, leading the successful U.S. launch of Kyprolis (carfilzomib) until the acquisition of Onyx by Amgen in 2013. From 2002 to 2011 she held several senior commercial positions at Amgen, including Vice President and General Manager, U.S. Bone Health and Vice President and General Manager, U.S. Nephrology, where she led the launches of Prolia (denosumab) and Sensipar (cinacalcet) and grew Epogen and Aranesp revenue. From 1997 to 2002 she held senior sales and marketing leadership positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb.
She began her industry career at Sandoz, which merged with Ciba-Geigy to become Novartis in 1996, holding positions of increasing responsibility in clinical development and culminating as Vice President of Medical Affairs, overseeing clinical studies across nephrology, rheumatology, oncology and CNS indications. As CEO of Halozyme she has overseen the raising of over $1.5 billion through follow-on and convertible debt offerings, executed three share repurchase programs returning approximately $1.55 billion to stockholders, and led the acquisition of three companies. She received her M.B. Ch.B. (U.S. equivalent to an M.D.) from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, and her M.R.C.P. from the Royal College of Physicians, Glasgow, Scotland.
