The Acquisition Playbook.

Three patterns run through Accenture's acquisitions — what it looks for, how it pays, and how it folds in what it buys.

01
Acquisition criteria
Capability tuck-ins, not scale plays.
Accenture buys narrow capability and talent and folds each target straight into a named practice rather than running it standalone — Kurt Salmon into Accenture Strategy, Droga5 and The Monkeys into Accenture Interactive, Novetta into Accenture Federal Services, umlaut into Industry X, and Udacity into Accenture LearnVantage. The acquired brand becomes a capability inside an existing unit, not a new operating segment.

02
Capital deployment
Skills and people are the asset.
Accenture's announcements consistently lead with headcount — more than 4,200 engineers at umlaut, roughly 1,300 analytics specialists at Novetta, 500-plus creatives at Droga5, and about 1,400 security professionals at CyberCX. These are effectively acqui-hires that add scarce, in-demand skills in AI, cyber, engineering and creative faster than organic hiring could.

03
Integration approach
Following the technology cycle.
The targets track whatever capability clients are buying at the time — design and experience in the mid-2010s (The Monkeys, Droga5), analytics and search (Search Technologies, Novetta), cloud and product engineering (umlaut, Nextira), and most recently AI skilling and cybersecurity (Udacity, CyberCX). Julie Sweet framed the umlaut deal on the thesis that digital would ultimately be applied to the core of how clients design, engineer and manufacture their products.
