Microsoft Corporation acquired Winternals, a transaction announced in July 2006.
Winternals operates in Platforms & Services Division (Windows Component Platform Team), is based in Austin, Texas. Winternals Software LP supplied Windows-based enterprises with systems-recovery and data-protection tools and operated the Sysinternals freeware site. Microsoft acquired it to lower customers' total cost of ownership on Windows and bring deep kernel-level expertise (co-founders Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell) to future Windows versions.

I've had my eye on Mark for some time. The work he and Bryce have completed in system recovery and data protection illustrates the depth of thinking and skill they will bring to future versions of Windows.Jim Allchin, Co-President, Platforms & Services Division, Microsoft
