About This Deal

Microsoft Corporation acquired MinecraftEdu, a transaction announced in January 2016, structured as Acquisition of the MinecraftEdu product from TeacherGaming LLC.

MinecraftEdu operates in Education / Minecraft Education Edition. MinecraftEdu was a classroom-focused edition of Minecraft, built by TeacherGaming LLC and already used in more than 7,000 classrooms across over 40 countries. Microsoft acquired it to launch an expanded, purpose-built Minecraft Education Edition with new tools for educators and student collaboration.

Educators were already using Minecraft to teach digital citizenship, empathy, social skills and literacy, and Microsoft wanted a dedicated classroom version to expand those capabilities.
