Microsoft Corporation acquired CompareNet, a transaction announced in March 1999.
CompareNet operates in MSN (MSN Sidewalk), is based in San Francisco, California, USA. CompareNet ran one of the internet's leading comparison-shopping services, with a database of more than 40,000 products across nearly 100 categories (electronics, appliances, automobiles, sporting goods and more) drawing over 1.5 million unique users a month. Microsoft bought the 40-person San Francisco company to accelerate MSN's interactive comparison-shopping capabilities and fold the service into the MSN Sidewalk online guide.
Expand MSN's consumer e-commerce and comparison-shopping capabilities and build MSN into a premier online marketplace.
Advisory firms were not disclosed for this transaction.
