Gilligan was Chief Executive Officer of Capella Education Company, an online education provider, from 2009 until August 2018, where he also served as a director and as Chairman. He then served as Executive Vice Chairman and later Vice Chairman of Strategic Education, Inc. through April 2023 following its merger with Capella, and earlier was President and CEO of United Subcontractors, Inc. and President and CEO of Honeywell International's Automation and Control Solutions business. He has been a Graco director since 2001 and has served as independent Chair of the Board since February 2024 and Chair of the Governance Committee.
