Adrian Adams has served as a member of Akebia Therapeutics' Board of Directors since the completion of the merger with Keryx Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. in December 2018, and serves as Chairperson of the Board. He has more than 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, including numerous roles as Chief Executive Officer. From January 2020 to November 2023 he was Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the board of Impel Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and from 2016 to 2019 he was Chief Executive Officer and a director of Aralez Pharmaceuticals Inc. He has previously led Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, POZEN, Kos Pharmaceuticals, Sepracor, Inspire Pharmaceuticals and Neurologix, and held senior positions at Novartis, SmithKline Beecham and Imperial Chemical Industries.

Michael Rogers has served as a member of Akebia Therapeutics' Board of Directors since the completion of the merger with Keryx Biopharmaceuticals in December 2018, having chaired Keryx's board from 2017 until the merger. He has more than 30 years of financial experience and executive leadership in the biotechnology industry. He served as Chief Financial Officer of Apnimed, Inc. from November 2020 to April 2024, of Aerpio Pharmaceuticals from 2017 to 2019, and of Acorda Therapeutics from 2013 to 2016, and was Chief Financial Officer of Indevus Pharmaceuticals from 1999 to 2009. Earlier in his career he was an investment banker at Lehman Brothers and PaineWebber focused on life sciences companies.

LeAnne M. Zumwalt has served as a member of Akebia Therapeutics' Board of Directors since February 2021. From January 2000 to January 2021 she served in various roles at DaVita Inc., one of the largest providers of kidney care services in the United States, most recently as Group Vice President, Government Affairs. Earlier she was Chief Financial Officer of Vivra Specialty Partners, Inc. from 1997 to 1999 and held various executive positions, including Chief Financial Officer, at Vivra Incorporated from 1991 to 1997, and was a Senior Manager at Ernst & Young LLP.

John P. Butler has served as a member of Akebia Therapeutics' Board of Directors since July 2013 and was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Akebia in September 2013. From 2011 to 2013 he was Chief Executive Officer of Inspiration Biopharmaceuticals, Inc., where he led the transactions that resulted in the sale of its hemophilia assets to Cangene Corporation and Baxter International in early 2013. From 1997 to 2011 he held various positions at Genzyme Corporation (now Sanofi), most recently as President of the company's rare genetic diseases business and previously leading its renal division, and earlier held sales and marketing positions at Amgen Inc. and Hoffmann-La Roche.

Ronald E. Frieson has served as a member of Akebia Therapeutics' Board of Directors since November 2021. Since July 2020 he has been Chief Operating Officer of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), having previously served as its President, Foundation and External Affairs from 2015 to 2020 and as Chief Public Policy Officer from 2008 to 2015. He spent many years at BellSouth (acquired by AT&T Inc. in 2006) in roles of increasing responsibility, most recently as President, Georgia Operations, and was BellSouth's first Chief Diversity Officer.

Cynthia Smith has served as a member of Akebia Therapeutics' Board of Directors since August 2018. Since 2016 she has served as a board member and strategic advisor for biotechnology companies. She previously served as Chief Commercial Officer and a member of the Executive Committee of ZS Pharma, Inc. from 2013 to 2016 (acquired by AstraZeneca in 2015), as Vice President, Market Access and Commercial Development at Affymax, Inc. from 2008 to 2013, and held various senior leadership positions at Merck & Co. from 2000 to 2008. Before her industry career she was a healthcare policy analyst in the Office of Management and Budget at the White House from 1995 to 2000.

Philip J. Vickers, Ph.D. was elected to Akebia Therapeutics' Board of Directors as a Class I director in April 2026. Since September 2023 he has served as President, Chief Executive Officer and a director of Solu Therapeutics, Inc., a venture-capital-backed biotechnology company. He was Chief Executive Officer and a director of Faze Medicines from January 2021 to November 2022 and President and Chief Executive Officer of Northern Biologics Inc. from November 2017 to December 2020. From June 2013 to June 2017 he was Global Head of Research and Development and an Executive Committee member at Shire plc, and he earlier held research and development roles at Merck & Co., Pfizer, Boehringer-Ingelheim and Resolvyx Pharmaceuticals.

Myles Wolf, M.D., M.M.Sc. has served as a member of Akebia Therapeutics' Board of Directors since April 2020 and has significant experience advising biotechnology, pharmaceutical and diagnostic firms on strategy, target identification and clinical drug development. Since 2024 he has served as the Sanford I. Weill Professor and Chair of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and as Physician-in-Chief at New York Presbyterian Hospital. From 2016 to 2024 he was Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Charles Johnson, MD Professor of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine. His patient-oriented, epidemiological and basic laboratory research focuses on disordered mineral metabolism across the spectrum of chronic kidney disease.

Steven C. Gilman, Ph.D. served as a Class I director of Akebia Therapeutics' Board of Directors and resigned from the Board effective April 1, 2026. His resignation was not the result of any disagreement with the Company on any matter relating to its operations, policies or practices. During 2025 and into 2026 through the date of his resignation, Dr. Gilman served on the Company's Compensation Committee and its Research & Development Committee.

Erik J. Ostrowski joined Akebia Therapeutics in June 2024 as Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Business Officer and Treasurer. He previously served as President, Interim Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of AVROBIO, Inc. from May 2023 to June 2024, and as its Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer from January 2019 to May 2023. From 2014 to 2018 he was Chief Financial Officer of Summit Therapeutics plc, and from July 2010 to June 2014 he was Vice President of Finance at Organogenesis Inc. Earlier he worked in investment banking, most recently as a director with Leerink Partners LLC, and began his career as an accountant with Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP).

Steven K. Burke, M.D. joined Akebia Therapeutics in August 2019 and serves as Senior Vice President, Chief Research & Development Officer and Medical Officer. From August 2006 to July 2019 he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Proteon Therapeutics, Inc., a company developing therapeutics for patients with kidney and vascular diseases. From 2001 to 2006 he was Senior Vice President of Medical and Regulatory Affairs at Genzyme, and from 1994 to 2000 he held roles at GelTex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. including Vice President of Clinical Research and Medical Director. He received an A.B. from Harvard College and an M.D. from Cornell University Medical College.

Nicholas P. Grund joined Akebia Therapeutics in January 2024 as Senior Vice President, Chief Commercial Officer. He previously served as President of Eurofins Transplant Genomics from January 2021 to November 2022 and as owner and consultant at NG Strategy Consulting from May 2019 to December 2020. Prior to that he was Chief Commercial Officer of AMAG Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from January 2016 to March 2019, and from 2002 to 2015 held positions of increasing responsibility at Genzyme Corporation, a Sanofi company, where he served as Head of Specialty Care.

Carolyn M. Rucci joined Akebia Therapeutics in 2021 and serves as Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Secretary, a role to which she was appointed effective January 26, 2026. She previously served as the Company's General Counsel from May 2022 to January 2026 and as Vice President, Legal from September 2021 to May 2022. Before joining Akebia she worked at AMAG Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from 2016 to 2021, most recently as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, Corporate, and began her career in the corporate group at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP, where she rose to the level of Counsel.
