Dr. Tom Leighton co-founded Akamai in 1998, served as Chief Scientist until becoming CEO in 2013, and has led the company's evolution from a content delivery network into a cybersecurity and cloud computing company; over his tenure as CEO Akamai's revenue grew from under $1.4 billion in 2012 to $4.2 billion in 2025, with security revenue rising from under $25 million to $2.2 billion. He holds more than 50 patents, was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2017, received the 2018 Marconi Prize and the 2023 IEEE John von Neumann Medal, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
