The Acquisition Playbook.

Three patterns run through Airbnb's acquisitions — what it looks for, how it pays, and how it folds in what it buys.

01
Acquisition criteria
Buy supply Airbnb can't grow organically.
Airbnb's biggest deals added accommodation types it didn't already have — boutique hotels via HotelTonight, ultra-premium villas via Luxury Retreats, and furnished corporate/extended-stay units via Urbandoor. Each brought curated inventory and operator relationships that would have taken years to build listing by listing.

Capital deployment
Pay largely in stock and keep the founders.

03
Integration approach
Acquisitions seed new product tiers and capabilities.
Luxury Retreats' expertise underpinned the later launch of Airbnb Luxe, HotelTonight extended Airbnb into hotels, and the 2023 GamePlanner.AI acqui-hire — led by Siri co-founder Adam Cheyer — was bought to accelerate AI across the platform rather than as a standalone product.
