We refer you to the forward-looking statements included in our press release and earnings presentation. This morning, we will review our financial results for the second quarter 2026 and share our outlook for our key product lines and end markets. As you saw in our press release, our resilient second quarter results reflected a significant sequential improvement in earnings and cash flow amid what remains a highly dynamic macro environment, particularly in Plant Nutrients. To drive through cycle value creation and support total shareholder return with higher highs and higher lows, we remain focused on commercial execution, operational excellence, and disciplined capital deployment.
As we discussed on prior calls, our ammonia turnaround was moved to the second quarter and scoped to align with our supplier's natural gas pipeline inspection. Lastly, we are focused on generating meaningful operating cash flow to support disciplined capital deployment. From a working capital perspective, our cash conversion cycle benchmarks in the top quartile among peers. As we allocate capital, our discretionary organic investments target greater than 20% returns.
Our SUSTAIN growth program is generating returns in excess of 30%, and we remain on track to deliver product mix optimization with 75% ammonium sulfate granular conversion. This is an important milestone as we continue to align our production output with growing demand for sulfur nutrition. We will continue to ensure a well-managed balance sheet that will afford the investments for performance and growth. We continue to expect improved earnings and cash flow in the second half of the year compared to the first half as we build momentum into 2027.
What went well
- Delivered significant sequential improvement in earnings and cash flow versus the first quarter, with net favorable pricing over raw material costs a tailwind across the portfolio; management called the results resilient amid a dynamic macro environment.
- Fully offset a $72 million year-over-year raw material cost headwind (driven by rising benzene and sulfur) through commercial execution and pricing, leaving the year-over-year net price-over-raws impact neutral in the quarter; on a sequential basis the $10 million headwind in 1Q flipped to a $39 million tailwind in 2Q.
- Sales of $421 million rose approximately 3% year-over-year, comprised of 18% favorable pricing (13% raw material pass-through and 5% market-based) partially offset by a 15% volume decline.
- Ended the fertilizer year at near-record domestic granular ammonium sulfate volume and stayed on track for 75% ammonium sulfate granular conversion, supported by the SUSTAIN growth program, which is generating returns in excess of 30%.
- Grew ammonia sales to roughly 49,000 short tons in the first half, up from 33,000 short tons in the first half of 2025, with full-year 2026 ammonia sales volume expected to be up 30% versus a prior record 2025.
- Nylon Solutions and Chemical Intermediates performed at or better than expectations, with resin volumes up year-over-year on improved operational performance and strong commercial execution and mix optimization supporting margins.
What went wrong
- Adjusted EBITDA fell to $32 million, down $24 million from the prior year, and adjusted EPS of $0.19 declined $1.05 year-over-year.
- Sales volume declined 15%, a $17 million unfavorable EBITDA impact, driven primarily by lower Plant Nutrients sales as challenging agricultural fundamentals and weak farmer economics cut in-season fertilizer purchases.
- Sulfur input costs moved to record highs, amplified by conflict in the Middle East, with the Tampa marker at $655 per long ton in the second quarter and a further record $705 in the third quarter; every $100 per long ton change equates to roughly a $35 million annual cost impact for AdvanSix.
- Lower utilization rates and the timing of planned plant turnarounds (including the ammonia turnaround moved to 2Q, with Hopewell running around the mid-70s) drove an approximately $4 million unfavorable operational impact.
- The effective tax rate rose year-over-year, primarily because 45Q carbon capture tax credits had been claimed in the prior-year period.
- Fertilizer inventory left in the channel from soft late-season demand prompted competitive intensity from importers and other producers liquidating positions, and management now expects a greater-than-normal $10 million-$15 million sequential Plant Nutrients earnings headwind on the fall fill reset.
