The Rationale That Repeats.

Three patterns show up across 10x Genomics's deal book — what the team buys, how it pays, and how it integrates. The patterns are the throughline; the deals below are the evidence.

01
Acquisition criteria
Acquire the foundational technology, then turn it into a product platform.
Every 10x Genomics acquisition brought in foundational IP that became the basis of a named product line: Epinomics' ATAC-seq fed the Chromium Single Cell ATAC Solution, Spatial Transcriptomics became Visium, and ReadCoor plus CartaNA together formed the foundation of the Xenium In Situ platform. The deals were technology and IP buys, not revenue or distribution plays.

02
Capital deployment
Buy out competing approaches to lock up an emerging field.
In the In Situ space, 10x acquired both ReadCoor (a Harvard spinout from George Church's lab) and CartaNA (out of Mats Nilsson's lab at Stockholm University) within the same announcement, combining more than 110 In Situ patents and applications. Management framed both deals as the result of a comprehensive assessment of In Situ efforts worldwide — consolidating the strongest teams and IP rather than competing against them.

03
Integration approach
A strong Scandinavian R&D footprint.
Three of the five targets were Northern European — Spatial Transcriptomics and CartaNA in Stockholm and Tetramer Shop in Copenhagen — and the acquired teams were folded into 10x's Swedish research center. The pattern reflects 10x sourcing deep academic expertise in spatial and in situ biology directly from the European labs that pioneered those methods.
